Legacy versions of Windows (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000) suffer from an issue where the icons in the notification area (also known as system tray) are only displayed with 16 colours. This was fixed in more recent versions (Me and XP).

If you’re familiar with a hex editor, feel free to try these instructions (NT 4 users click here = replace all two matches of ‚6A 01 6A 00 6A 01‘ in explorer.exe with ‚6A 01 6A 00 6A 11‘). Applying this modification will make the tray icons shine in true colours.

Don’t forget to turn off System File Protection when trying this. And you may need to redo this after applying any update or service pack.
